“I would really like to learn all this stuff about website building – SEO, Google Analytics, etc. I considered buying a book but it was intimidating.  I looked at the video tutorials but it was confusing.  I considered going to school but it would take a lot of time.  I wanna focus on the project, but there’s a lot of things I wanna do instead.”

Does the quote sound familiar?

I’m considering  starting a blog called “The Unbearable Abundance of Coolness”.  Even good things can be overwhelming in mass quantities.

Technology, with its infinite possibilities, can be overwhelming.  I looked at all the options I have in promoting this website.  All for free.  I have been online for two hours now – “promoting my site”  on various free websites.

What is it costing me?  MY TIME and ATTENTION.

Lesson one in online economics.  Everyone is competing for A Slice of our Attention.

They will throw the most expensive websites at you – free of charge – in exchange for this most precious commodity.

Think about it, Facebook did not start out making money.  But it cost them millions of dollars to keep it running.  It has always been free to you.
Same thing with Twitter.  Same thing with Zynga (makers of Farmville, Mafia Wars).

All for free.  Seemingly.  Think about how much of your time you spent with them.
